Connections
by Dolores Bader
It’s a Small Town thing.
I was with a group of women leaving a restaurant in a nearby
community recently when a lady with a big smile approached us with a
familiar question, “Where are you ladies from?” (Small town
residents are quick to pick out new faces.) When we answered La
Porte City she surprised us with the words “You have such a nice
City Park!” Reading our questioning look she explained that a year
ago finding their local park unavailable for a family get-together
they had come to LPC for their gathering. |

Food for Thought
by Jane Whittlesey
A couple of weeks back, Mike and I attended the
Iowa Newspaper Association's annual convention. While the convention
didn't have an official theme, the subject matter of the various
seminars and presentations followed a very similar topic - online
newspapers and their place in our changing world. As a matter of
fact, Mike had been asked to present a seminar featuring The
Progress Review's Press Pass. |

Simply Put
by Mike Whittlesey
At the risk of sounding like the opening of a
Criminal Minds episode, it
was Albert Einstein who said, "The most important motive for work in
school and in life is pleasure in work, pleasure in its result, and
the knowledge of the value of the result to the community."
Contrast Einstein’s words with
recent surveys of how Americans feel about their jobs and you begin
to realize how cynical the world has become since his death in 1955.
Perhaps it comes as no surprise that workers in the United States
(the legal ones, anyway) are growing increasingly dissatisfied with
their jobs. Even sadder still is the fact that the decline in job
satisfaction is consistent across all age groups and income levels. |

Back When
by Lois Miszner |
|
I really was at a loss for an idea to talk about today. But a friend
called and told me to watch Channel 32 on TV and maybe I could get
an idea. She said it was a program about “BACK WHEN” and it might
help. I really enjoyed it. The men on the program talked about when
they used to thresh oats and this is the time of the year when it
happened. |

Hawkins' Happenings

School
starts this week and I hope you remembered to stop in the library to
pick up a library card for your student. We have lots of Accelerated
Reader books marked and ready to be read and tested on. It is never
too early to start thinking about the AR tests and goals. Students
can start reading now and be ready to take the first test of the
school year soon. If you need help finding a book, please ask any of
our librarians and we would be more than happy to help you find a
book of interest.

Meditations
by Area Pastors |
|
One day, as a passenger in an
airplane, I started to talk with my neighbor. My goal was to share
Jesus Christ with him. During the conversation he said that he is a
Christian who goes to church regularly. Then he said that he
believes everyone, even those who believe in different religions,
will go to heaven after death, because he thought it is too cruel if
God only allows Christians to be in heaven. So I explained the
teachings of the Bible, especially John 14:6, where Jesus said, “I
am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father
but through me.”
