WASSON AWARD - As Dave Zea prepares to accept the Jesse Wasson Award, daughter Mary Delagardelle’s loving pat on the back says it all.Photo by Mary Bauer (June 24, 2009). VETERANS TRIBUTE - In a moving ceremony during the annual Festival of Trails weekend, American Legion Post #207 and VFW Post #3983 dedicated a Veterans Tribute Memorial located at the corner of Chestnut and Main. As Union High School graduate Garrett Gingrich gave the keynote address, Mary Bauer captured this image which included area veterans Daniel Craft, Dick Hutton, Tony Paulus and Travis Fleshner (June 24, 2009).
FINAL DELIVERY - After serving her country in the Marine Corps, 2009 marked the final year of Teri Calhoon’s service to her local community in another way, following 32 years with the United States Postal Service. Photo by Mike Whittlesey (February 25, 2009). SLEEPY HEAD - On a late winter drive through Hickory Hills Park, Jane Whittlesey came upon this napping deer who, after waking up, didn’t seem at all interested in, or concerned about her camera (February 4, 2009).
THE FORCE IS STRONG - The Union High School boys basketball team had an unfair advantage in their substate contest against Oelwein on February 27, as Darth Vader whipped the Knights’ fans into a frenzy. Fortunately for Union, Jared Wauters’ buzzer beating jumper was no Jedi mind trick. Photo by Mary Bauer (March 4, 2009). ICE JAM - It’s not unusual to see water over lower Main Street following a heavy rain in the spring or summer. But in February? Alas, good ole’ LPC is a four season flood zone when an early winter thaw results in an ice jam and rising waters. Photo by Jane Whittlesey (February 18, 2009).
ALL ABOARD UNION STATION - Following the closing of the Family Tastee Treats, local residents were without their favorite ice cream establishment until the newly named Union Station opened its windows, just in time for the Festival of Trails Celebration. Photo by Mary Bauer (June 24, 2009).
TAKE A RIDE ON THE FIRE ENGINE - Each year, as part of National Fire Prevention Week, La Porte City Elementary School kindergarteners are treated to a ride on the city’s fire engine. The trip promises to be one that is new and exciting, even for the teacher, Dee Blanshan (waving), whose 2009 trip was her 26th. Photo by Mary Bauer (October 14, 2009).
STATE OF TALL CORN - What happens when you plant a tropical variety of corn from Mexico and Brazil in the fertile, Iowa soil? Cliff and Nancy McFarland learned that you get a stalk that towers over 11 feet tall, at the time this photo was taken. Photo by Mike Whittlesey (August 12, 2009). WII BIT OF FUN - Jean Sides shows excellent follow-through, as Rayona Roszell looks on. Thanks to an improvement grant offered by Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging, the La Porte City Community Center was the beneficiary of a Wii video game console and games, hence the bowling alley-like action.
