“Give Thanks To God In All Circumstances”

“Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 5:18)

We live in a world of continuous challenge, trials, and suffering.  For many of us, life is a never-ending roller coaster ride with its ups and downs.  When we hear or read verses like Galatians 5:18, we throw up our hands in despair.  How can we be thankful for some of the stuff that is going on in our lives?

The secret to a thankful heart is in the level of trust we have in God.  And trust in God increases the more we get to know Him.  That’s the way it works.  When we seek to know God in prayer and studying His word, we will be amazed at how our ability to cope with life increases.  The challenges and trials do not go away but we will understand that they happen because we live in a sinful world.  God does not cause the trials in our lives but He will use them to draw us closer to Him and to bring blessing to us.  As time goes on the growth in our knowledge and understanding of God will enable us to give thanks in all circumstances.

The Bible is God’s revelation of Himself to us.  It is also our ‘owner manual’ on how to live a fulfilling life.  God wants us to live a full and abundant life.  If that is also what we want, we need to get to know Him because He is the one who will make it possible.  Attending a church on Sunday morning is a start but it won’t get us there.  We need to do more if we ever want to really know and trust God.  Get involved with a Bible discussion group at church or in your neighborhood.  And develop the daily habit of talking with Him.  Our attitude about life will change and we will soon learn to ‘give thanks in all circumstances.’
