After recent, heavy spring rains, great egrets (above left) and a large flock of American white
pelicans were sighted at the north edge of La Porte
City near the Klima Wildlife Area. Pictured above at right, is a pelican
making a two point
landing on a temporary pond formed on low ground. Though not often seen in the area, the pelicans
stopped for a rest on their way north after spending the winter on
the Gulf Coast.

Connections
by Dolores Bader
Are you up to date on the latest
brouhaha in downtown Waterloo? Some people want to tear up three
blocks of pavement and put in brick streets. Some don’t. Nothing is
without controversy in this age. Waterloo had brick streets long
before LPC did. I have a picture of bricked East Fourth St. in the
late 1800’s thanks to Mae Schrader. We may be within shouting
distance of our own decision about our own beloved bricks. We are
probably one major infrastructure problem away from Decision Day. |

Food for Thought
by Jane Whittlesey
A couple of weeks back, Mike and I attended the
Iowa Newspaper Association's annual convention. While the convention
didn't have an official theme, the subject matter of the various
seminars and presentations followed a very similar topic - online
newspapers and their place in our changing world. As a matter of
fact, Mike had been asked to present a seminar featuring The
Progress Review's Press Pass. |

Simply Put
by Mike Whittlesey
At the risk of sounding like the opening of a
Criminal Minds episode, it
was Albert Einstein who said, "The most important motive for work in
school and in life is pleasure in work, pleasure in its result, and
the knowledge of the value of the result to the community."
Contrast Einstein’s words with
recent surveys of how Americans feel about their jobs and you begin
to realize how cynical the world has become since his death in 1955.
Perhaps it comes as no surprise that workers in the United States
(the legal ones, anyway) are growing increasingly dissatisfied with
their jobs. Even sadder still is the fact that the decline in job
satisfaction is consistent across all age groups and income levels. |

Back When
by Lois Miszner |
|
It’s
kinda late on Sunday afternoon when I’m starting to write this
column. The sun finally came out and it is really nice, what we
should have this time of the year. It sure lifted my spirits and I
sure like it. Just hope for a few more days if it to kinda bring us
back to “normal.”

After looking at all the flood water around me today and hearing
this weekend’s forecast I have decided that reading is the activity
of choice for the weekend. We have currently added several new books
to our collection. If you are interested, we have the book
Shattered Dreams My Life as a Polygamists Wife by Irene Spencer.
