Eric N. Gross, Union High School senior, La Porte City, received an appointment to the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York with the Class of 2012. Eric is the son of Mark and Elaine Gross of La Porte City. He was selected from a nationwide field of over 12,000 applicants to fill one of the 1200 available vacancies at the Academy. Eric received letters of nomination from Congressman Bruce Braley, and Senators Charles Grassley and Tom Harkin.

Eric lettered in and was team captain in football and wrestling. He is in the National Honor Society, attended Iowa Boy’s State, won a “Who’s Who in America Award, and is in the top 10% of his class.      A West Point appointment is a full four-year college scholarship where Eric will receive a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army upon graduation. He will then serve five years of active duty as an Army officer.

Eric joins John Coombs, son of Warren and Mary Dilley, as the only other West Point candidate from La Porte City.

Tribute to Salute Veterans

Once again, readers are invited to submit a photo for publication in The Progress Review's upcoming Memorial Day Tribute featuring active, retired and deceased members of the various branches of the armed forces. Last year, 68 veterans, whose service spanned the years 1919 to the present, were featured in a four page section and special video presentation.

This year, in response to the many requests received, The Progress Review will make space available for families to include a brief statement, description or comments with their loved one's photo. While publication of the photo is free, the cost to include up to 30 words to accompany the photo is $10.

Photos may be sent to or dropped off at 313 Main Street, La Porte City, Iowa 50651. The deadline for submission is Thursday, May 15. Payment for accompanying text is due at that time. Photos and text may also be sent via e-mail to: news@theprogressreview.com. To insure the safe return of photos that are mailed, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

PLEASE NOTE: The photos submitted for last year's Memorial Day Tribute will automatically be included in this year's tribute, as well. Families do NOT have to resubmit last year's photo to be included in the 2008 tribute, but certainly can submit a different photo if they so choose.

For more information, call 342-2429 or logon to www.theprogressreview.com and click on the Memorial Day Tribute link.

Unlimited Garbage Pickup Following Garage Sales

Residents are reminded of the unlimited garbage pickup during the week of May 7-11. Garbage must still be placed in containers or bags that do not exceed 40 gallons each and no container may exceed a weight of 50 lbs. To arrange pickup for larger items and appliances (for an additional fee) contact City Hall at 342-3396.

The City’s junk ordinance makes it unlawful to store, accumulate or allow to remain on any public or private property within the City limits junk or junk vehicles. Junk includes, but is not limited to, rags, batteries, paper, trash, scrap materials, discarded household goods and waste lumber.  Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the unlimited garbage bag pickup and clean up their property as needed to avoid possible penalties for violating the ordinance.

The Goodwill trailer will NOT be available following this spring’s City-wide garage sales; however donations are always needed at Goodwill Industries.
