The Iowa Lions Club and Area Education Agency 267 are joining forces to screen hearing and vision for preschool age children. The screening will be held at the Preschool, currently located at Heartland Community Church at 705 Bishop Avenue in La Porte City.
Audiologists from AEA 267 will screen hearing of children ages 3 to 5 years of age on Wednesday, November 4 from 8:15 AM to 3 PM and Thursday, November 5 from 8:30 AM until noon. Children enrolled in preschool will have this done during their regular class hours. This service is also offered to children not enrolled in preschool and is available at no cost during the same hours. No appointment is necessary; consent forms will be available upon arrival.
The Vinton Lions Club is sponsoring a “Coming to Your Senses” vision screening project at the same time. The voluntary program is open to all preschool age children at no cost. How is the screening done? It is as simple as having your child’s picture taken. Trained Lion’s Club members use a special camera called a MTI Photoscreener which takes a special Polaroid picture of a child’s eyes to detect eye problems in children who are too young to communicate possible vision problems. The results of the vision screening are evaluated by specialists in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Parents/guardians will receive the results in two to four weeks after the screening. If a possible vision problem is detected, you will be given a letter of referral for your child and list of ophthalmologists and optometrists in your area. The hours for the vision screening are Wed. Nov. 4 from 8:15-10:30 AM and 1:45 -3 PM and Thu. Nov. 5 from 8:30 AM-noon. Again, children enrolled in preschool will have this done during their regular class hours; others can come during the listed hours. It takes only a few minutes; consent forms will be available upon arrival.
