Don Shelton of Cedar Falls, who has had a cabin just outside of La Porte City since 1962, will be celebrating his 80th birthday with an Open House on Sunday, February 7, at the Cedar Falls Amvets, 20th & Irving Streets, from 1-4 p.m. No invitations are being sent and he requests no gifts, only your presence.
Don was born February 7, 1930, and grew up in New Hartford. He graduated from New Hartford High School in 1947 and served in the United States Navy as a hospital corpsman from 1948-1952. He married Mabel Tomkins in 1953 and they raised two daughters in Cedar Falls, Kathy (Dave) Ott of Waterloo and Joyce (Allen) Craft of Colesburg (formerly of La Porte City). Don worked at The Waterloo Corrugated Box Factory (formerly Mead Containers, then Weyerhaeuser Paper), now known as International Paper, in Waterloo; he retired in 1991.
After Mabel's death in 1995, Don remained in Cedar Falls and on April 4, 2002, he married Verna Blair. They live at 3010 Cypress Avenue in Cedar Falls. Don has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
