La Porte City Elementary School wrapped up the month of January with their annual week-long Read-A-Thon. This year’s theme was "Get Hooked on Reading" and it included a lot of pirates and sea faring fun!

The week began with a pirate skit, an assembly, and a recital of the Pirates Pledge to get the students into the reading spirit. Throughout the week, they enjoyed learning some fun vocabulary terms, a daily treasure hunt, "Reading Alerts" from some friendly pirates, and an "All in the Hall" read-in.

The students also enjoyed a visit from several high school students who came over to read with many of the classes. In addition to the reading activities, students were also encouraged to bring in any spare change from home to support others in need.

By the end of the week, $450.00 had been donated by students and teachers who had shared their treasure to make the local community, country, and world better places. The money raised was donated to Hawkins Memorial Library, the La Porte City Food Bank, the Mark and Teresa Jenkins family, and the Haiti Relief Fund.

The Read-A-Thon week is always an enjoyable way to highlight the importance of reading, while having some learning fun, and using it as an opportunity to help others in need. Thanks to the many people and families who helped make this week such a memorable one for the students!
