During a recent meeting, the Union School Board voted to make a few changes to the organization of its baseball and softball teams. In addition, the board also approved adding more games to both schedules.

Due to several factors, the Union Middle and High School Baseball/Softball teams will have a different look this summer. In the past, there have been two middle school teams consisting of 7th and 8th graders, one in Dysart and one in La Porte City as well as a JV and varsity team at the high school level. This summer, the middle school teams will combine to create one middle school team which will practice and play games in Dysart and have one coach. This team will consist of 7th graders while the 8th graders will have a choice. The 8th graders may choose to play on the middle school team or on a new high school team - the freshmen/sophomore team. This team will be made up of players in grades 8-10 who will have a schedule of approximately 20 games. This team will also have their own coach and practice times at the Union High School field.

Just as there is currently, there will be a JV team with a schedule of approximately 24 games which will be made up of players in grades 8-11 who demonstrate the ability to play at that level. Lastly, players in grades 8-12 who are physically, mentally, and emotionally ready to compete at the varsity level will follow the schedule as it has been in the past.

As needed, a shuttle for the players will be provided for those playing on the middle school team or a high school team.
