Three Elected to Union School Board

Voters in the Union Community School District have selected James Bronner, Ryan Moody and Robert Hanson to serve on the school district’s Board of Directors.

Bronner, the Finance Director for Black Hawk County, ran unopposed for the Director District 1 seat.

Moody, a special education teacher at Benton Community Middle School, also ran unopposed and will complete the one year remaining on the Director District 2 seat originally held by Joe Hadachek, who resigned in May after accepting the head football coaching position of Union High School.

Hanson, a Sales Representative for Pioneer Hi Bred, retained the At-Large Director seat he won in 2004, defeating challenger Tim Freeland.

The new school board members will be oficially installed at the September 24 Board of Directors meeting.

2007: Record Setting Magazine Sales at Union Middle School

Magazine sales at Union Middle School reached an all time high of $36,300 this year! UMS thanks all who supported this fundraiser with their merchandise orders. Profits from the sales will go to athletics, other activities, and to the students’ Junior Prom.

There were a number of incentives to get the students motivated, such as Limo Day, Bingo, Pencil Pull, and Basketball Shootout. The PAL groups in each grade level also had a contest every turn in day with the lucky PAL group winner receiving the traveling crazy chicken. The overall PAL winners were 8th grade - Mrs. Elliot; 7th grade - Mrs. Stull; and 6th grade - Mrs. Keough.

The individual winners were Rick Bauer in 8th grade, Zach Neuendorf in 7th grade, and Breann Bader in 6th grade.

Once again, thanks for supporting the students at UMS!

From the Principal’s Desk

By Mark Albertsen, Union Middle School Principal

We are off to a great start at Union Middle School. The Magazine Kick-Off went very well. Our goal was to sell $35,000. We reached $36,000. We want to thank the communities for all their support. This is a huge fundraiser for us each year to support our athletics and activities at Union Middle School. A portion of this money also goes towards their junior prom.

We continue to collect pop tabs, milk caps, Box Tops for Education, soup labels for the elementary, ink cartridges, and cell phones (these are sent into a company for recycling purposes). If you have any of these items, please drop them off at UMS. We will sort them out. We even accept game systems and DVDs—working or non-working.

All proceeds are for our student council, which spends money on students’ needs such as our new sign in front of the building and improvements in the auditorium.

Due to accounting purposes, we no longer are taking pennies. We used our penny money on some wireless microphones in the auditorium. Instead of saving one million pennies, we will be saving one million pop tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House.

Parents, please take time to talk to your student about the school day. Check their action planners to see what they have been doing and ask questions. We need your help on this. Together we can make a difference.

Every Friday, the student body meets in the cafeteria or auditorium to sing the school song. We also wear school colors, red and black, every Friday. We want our students to show their school pride and be proud to be a Union Knight. GO KNIGHTS!!!

Students attending games at UMS or UHS are there to watch the games. Please encourage your student to be on their best behavior. Please keep the footballs at home.
