Union Girls Golf
Union Head Girls Golf Coach Lesa Foss welcomed 13 girls to the Spring 2007 campaign, up six players from last year's squad. "Scores have been unconsistent thus far, but should level out as we head into the season," Coach Foss stated.

The Lady Knights dropped the home opener to Benton Community on April 16 by 22 strokes, losing 232-210. Four Knights carded 58s for the meet: senior Brooke Clark, sophs Lauren Powell and Emily Brandt and freshman Andi Jordt.

The following afternoon Union improved their game immensely, winning the triangular with Don Bosco and Dunkerton at LPC Golf Club. Andi Jordt (U) was medalist with a 51, and Brooke Clark runner up with a 52. Lauren Powell shot a 53, with Chelsea Ecklund adding a 56 for a team total 212. Don Bosco placed second with 231, while Dunkerton trailed with  279. The Knights once again dropped 20 strokes from the previous meet.

Union Boys Tennis Team 3rd at NICL Meet

On May 15 the UHS boys tennis team had an excellent day at the NICL Conference Tennis tournament in Waterloo. After some rainshowers causing a 2 1/2 hour delay, the action was fast and exciting.

Playing at #1 Singles, Mike Bruns lost 8-2, to #3 Seed, Lane Luhring of A-P. Mike came back in 1st round consolations to defeat Alex Nelson of S. Hardin 8-5 and proceeded to defeat Dana Begley of Hudson for 5th place 8-0.

At #2 Singles, senior Sam Knupp, seeded #2, opened with an 8-3 victory over Chase Ruzek of Hudson, followed by a 9-7 win over Benson of S. Hardin. Jay Miller of NU was too much in the finals, winning 8-0. Knupp finishes the year as conference runner-up with an 8-6 singles record. Sam's 18-8 career singles record ties him with Jared Reel on the career winning percentage for matches at .692.

At #3 Singles, Brian Wigg (also seeded second) won his first round match over Sean Taylor of Hudson 8-4, then defeated 3rd seeded Nate Smith of NU by an 8-5 margin. In the finals, Wigg again faced John Hubbard of A-P and lost by a score of 8-5, finishing as Conference runner-up and a 10-5 season record. He finishes the year in the Top Ten Career singles victories (23, tied with Aaron Wigg and Alex Allers for UHS) with a season to go.

One of the pleasant surprises of the day was at #4,  as unseeded Mark Jesse pulled out an upset of 3rd seeded Jeff Rash of Grundy Center by an 8-2 whipping. Jesse then faced the #2 seeded Matt Allbee (and eventual Champion) of S. Hardin and lost in a tiebreaker 8-9, 7-5 tiebreak. Jesse recovered from that heartbreaker to take 3rd place by defeating #1 seeded Christian Price of A-P 8-5, finishing 3rd in the Conference.

Two other major upsets occured at #5 and #6. At #5 Anthony Zeien upset #2 seed Tony Tan of NU by an 8-6 score, followed by another upset over #3 seeded Sam Miller of S. Hardin (8-6) before finally returning to earth with a loss to top seeded Alec Thompson of A-P by an 8-3 score; another Union runner-up!

At #6 Singles, TJ Brandhorst duplicated Zeien's accomplishment in the first round by defeating 2nd seeded Jeff Turner by an 8-6 margin, but losing to Paul Mauer in the semis by an 8-1 score. In the 3rd place consolation match TJ lost to Skylar Stark of Grundy Center by an 8-2 score.

Doubles also proved to be successful. At #1 Doubles, Bruns/Knupp were seeded 3rd. They won the first round match 8-4 over Grundy Center, upset 2nd seeded S. Hardin 8-6, then faced the ever tough NU duo of Mitra/Miller in the Championship, losing 8-1; Conference Runners-ups!

At #2 Doubles, Wigg/Jesse lost their first round match to NU in a hard fought 9-7 match. They rebounded by winning the 5th place match over Hudson 8-2.

At #3 Doubles, Zeien/Brandhorst continued to impress, with a first round 8-1 win over Hudson, followed by a major upset over the #2 pair of Hubbard/Weigmann 9-8 (7-4 Tiebreak). The Championship saw the top seeded S. Hardin  team defeat Union 8-3. Zeien/Brandhorst finish as conference runners-up and finish the year with a 9-6 record at #3 Doubles.

Congratulations to the Boys tennis team for a great day and for finishing strong. The dual meet campaign wound up 5-6, but many "revenge" matches at conference provided growth and development for some key players. Coach Bruce Wigg was very pleased with the progress of this team. "It was an enjoyable and productive day at the conference tournament and I am pleased with the  'outstanding' play of the players on this very long day of tennis."

Wigg also announced that Michael Bruns has been named the 2007 Union High School MVP, for his great effort, attitude, and fine play throughout the season as Union's #1 player.
